We’ve had speakers on our musical history\, healthcare history\, religious history\, architectural history\, educational history and business history to name a few. If you haven’t already joined us\, I encourage you to attend our very last First Friday in August where we will talk about the legacy of the future.” \nFirst Friday will be held at First Methodist Church located at 200 South Church Street in downtown Jackson on Friday\, August 5. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.\, lunch will be served starting at 11:45 a.m.\, and programming will start at approximately 12:15 p.m. \nAs this is a catered event\, advance tickets are required for attendance. The cut-off for purchase is 6 p.m. the Tuesday prior to the event. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Elaine is currently the Chairman of the Jackson Madison County Bicentennial Committee. She also served as the chair of the Jackson Madison County Library for five years. Ross \nJames (JR) Ross is the president and chief executive officer of West Tennessee Healthcare since May 2017. Throughout his 36 year career with the health system\, he has held various positions including emergency medical technician\, surgical intensive care registered nurse\, critical care coordinator\, cardiac services manager\, director of CCU\, administrator of the West Tennessee Surgery Center\, executive director of physician services\, director of case management/social services as well as vice president of hospital services. In 2009\, he was named chief operating officer for Jackson-Madison County General Hospital and in April 2016 the Board of Trustees named him the acting president and chief executive officer for the organization and full authority in 2017. \nA native of Henderson\, Tennessee\, JR has been active with numerous community and civic organizations. He serves on the executive board of the West Tennessee Council for Boy Scouts of America\, Jackson Airport Authority\, and chairman of the Jackson Chamber Board of Directors. He has formerly served as a member of the Union University Foundation Board and University Board of Directors\, and\, in 2015\, he served as the NAACP’s 2015 Freedom Fund Honorary Co-Chair. He is a member of One Jackson Action Committee\, Leadership Jackson Alumni Association\, Tennessee Hospital Association Diversity Council\, 100 Black Men of West Tennessee\, Madison County Board of Health and WestStar Alumni Association. In 2014\, Governor Bill Haslam appointed JR to the Emergency Medical Services Board of Directors for the State of TN of which he continues to serve. \nAdditionally\, JR is active with many professional organizations including\, the Tennessee Hospital Association where he serves as past chair of the THA Board of Directors\, Tennessee Organization of Nurse Executives (TONE)\, American Nurses Association (ANA)\, American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE)\, a delegate to Regional Policy Board 4 of the American Hospital Association and Trustee for Englewood Baptist Church. DESCRIPTION:Carnival atmosphere—Food\, Fun Games\, Entertainment\, History – The Rosenwald School was built for blacks in 1916 in the Bemis community. The facility was later gifted to West Bemis Missionary Baptist Church and was relocated in 2001. Through the work of Ms. Iday “Lucy” Smith’s vision and the help of the community it was converted into a community center and is now a 501c3 organization. Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame board members Dan Morris and David Thomas\, will speak on the past\, present and future of athletics in Jackson and Madison County. \nFirst Friday will be held at First Methodist Church located at 200 South Church Street in downtown Jackson on Friday\, June 3. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.\, lunch will be served starting at 11:45 a.m.\, and programming will begin at approximately 12:15 p.m. \nAs this is a catered event\, advance tickets are required for attendance. The cut-off for purchase is 6 p.m. the Tuesday prior to the event. Tickets will not be sold at the door. He is a board member of the Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame and presently serves as Director of Senior Adult Ministries at Englewood Baptist Church in Jackson. \nAbout David Thomas \nA native of Mayfield\, Kentucky\, and graduate of Mayfield High School\, David Thomas moved to Jackson in 1974 after obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mass Communication from Murray State University. He is a board member of the Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame. He has spent the last 19 years in media and is the news director and online editor of WNWS.COM\, NEWS/TALK 101.5 FM\, 93.1 FM\,  and 105.3 FM\, owned by Grace Media Group. David is an active member at Forest Heights United Methodist Church and in 1982\, became the third person in Jackson’s history to run the Boston Marathon. DESCRIPTION:Bemis Heritage Day will be held on Saturday\, May 21\, 2022\, at the Bemis Mill Village Museum which was builtin 1921-1922 as the Bemis Auditorium. The centennial celebration will honor this beautiful building located at 2North Missouri Street in Jackson\, TN (formerly Bemis). We will also celebrate the bicentennial anniversaries ofthe City of Jackson and Madison County. Special guests will be Jackson Mayor Scott Conger and MadisonCounty Mayor Jimmy Harris. \nMuseum doors will open at 10:00 a.m. with free admission. Browse the museum to visit with friends and to viewartifacts and vintage photos. Visit the museum’s Company Store to purchase a cookbook\, coloring book\,keepsake hand-held fan\, historical ornaments\, baseball caps (Historic Bemis and Chat ‘N Chew)\, DVDs ofvintage photos\, and other items listed on our website. \nAt 10:10 a.m.\, there will be a grand opening of the new playground equipment purchased from funds donated byAmerigroup Corporation for the Stella Duncan Park of Bemis at 110 South Missouri Street. The grand openingwill be led by Tony Black\, Director of the Jackson Recreation & Parks Department\, with special guests:Amerigroup President Chad Pendleton and Amerigroup staff members Madeline Mays\, Psasha Taylor\, EvanSwafford\, and Kelly Shearin. \nFrom 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.\, Bobby McAlexander will display his impressive and detailed ceramic replica ofthe Chat ‘N Chew\, a well-known hangout\, that was located beside South Side High School on South HighlandAvenue from 1958 until 1972. Rhonda Young will have a display for historic preservation\, “Archives R Us:Preserving Our Family Archives.” \nFrom 10:30 until 11:00 a.m.\, a program inside the museum will include a joint proclamation by Mayor Congerand Mayor Harris. There will be a portrayal of Ransom Hammond\, Employee of Bemis Bro. Bag Company\,portrayed by his grandson Greg M. Hammond\, and a portrayal of a Bemis Book Club Founder from 1930\,portrayed by current member Judy Roach Dorris. The Jackson-Madison Chapter\, National Society Daughters ofthe American Revolution\, will recognize our United States veterans on Armed Forces Day. The City of JacksonFire Department will display a large flag of the United States of America in front of the museum.Lunch will be available under the tent on the front lawn of the museum from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. (oruntil sold out) with delicious barbecue plates by Gaylon Cooper for $10 per plate (including soft drink). WillKemp from R & J Feed Supply will provide homemade strawberry ice cream (made in an ice cream makerpowered by a John Deere motor) for $3 per cup with all proceeds to Bemis Historical Society. Enjoy live musicfrom the 1950s\, 1960s\, and 1970s performed by the Bemis Boogie Blues Band – Willi X Evans\, Steve Patterson\,Tony McCaslin\, and Bobby Cleary. \nFrom 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.\, Joel Jackson\, Chairman of Bemis Historical Society\, will present a slideshow of photosand a video about the Bemis Auditorium/Museum\, including the entire building – attic\, balcony\, main floor\,basement\, and tunnel. \nChildren can enjoy the splash pad at the Bemis Mill Memorial Park located at 7 A Street and the playground atthe Stella Duncan Park. DESCRIPTION:The Browns and Cotton Grove Communities will celebrate their Madison County Bicentennial Heritage Day on Saturday\, May 14\, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Browns Ruritan Community Center\, formerly Browns School\, at 180 McLeary Road in Jackson and at Madison County Fire Station 12 at 190 McLeary Road. Enjoy a hamburger\, hot dog\, or a cup of Browns’ famous stew at the fire station. \nMemorabilia will be on display in the school\, and visitors are welcome to share copies of their vintage photos and documents from these communities. Join a fun game of cornhole and enjoy music provided by Jackson Area Plectral Society of Jackson. Pamphlets will be available with the rich history of Brown’s Church and Cotton Grove and a list of historic sites. \nThe first settlement in Madison County was at Cotton Grove in 1819 with pioneers John Hargrove\, Roderick McIver\, Duncan McIver\, Elijah Jones\, John Brown\, Thomas Brown\, and William Woolfork. Doctors Robert Fenner and McKnight soon joined the community. In 1821\, a Mr. Maddin grew the first cotton in the county. \nResidents of Brown’s Church and Cotton Grove look forward to sharing their Bicentennial Heritage Day with family and friends. DESCRIPTION:As part of the Bicentennial Celebration\, we will be screening the 1952 short film “Jackson in 1952” on Saturday\, May 7\, 2022 at 12:00 pm at the Jackson-Madison County Library. The film is believed to have been commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce 70 years ago to help sell the city to prospects. This is a genuine period piece from 70 years ago\, which includes:\n\n· Downtown Jackson\, believed to be on a Saturday\, with men in white shirts and ties and women in typical “Sunday dress” for a day of shopping.\n\n· Jackson’s downtown banks. Harbert Alexander identifies many of the people who are leading citizens.\n\n· Our native son and game show host Wink Martindale at the VFW swimming pool with a girlfriend and some of his buddies.
